The Sacred Books Series

The Book of Maps

A hugely fat man in a brown robe, sprinting full-out, rounded the corner, nearly losing his footing. He staggered, then righted himself and ran on, heading up the opposite sidewalk in the direction of the bookshop. The twins, who were both tinkering with the window display for probably the hundredth time that day, saw him immediately. They both stopped what they were doing and watched. When the man drew near, they could see he was terrified. His fleshy face was drenched with sweat. He was clutching something: a book. Dexter and Daphna looked at each other for a moment.

It was nearly 11 p.m. on Sunday evening, so all the other businesses in the Village were closed and there were no pedestrians about. The light in the shop evidently attracted the man’s attention because, as he passed it across the street, he looked over and saw Daphna and Dexter staring at him dumbly. A moment later, he was blundering toward them.

“Um, is the door locked?” Dexter asked, but before Daphna had a chance to check, the man burst inside, his eyes kaleidoscopic with fear.
